Movement is Power

Supporting Patients with Parkinson's Disease through PT & OT

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, offer support, and recognize the over 1 million people in the U.S. living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, there is hope — and movement is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Physical therapy plays a vital role in helping people with Parkinson’s move better, feel stronger, and stay independent longer. At Atlantic Physical Therapy Center, we’re proud to support patients every step of the way.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, balance, coordination, and posture. Common symptoms include:

  • Tremors or shaking

  • Muscle stiffness

  • Slowed movements (bradykinesia)

  • Balance issues

  • Shuffling gait

  • Changes in posture or facial expression

As the disease progresses, even simple tasks — like walking, getting up from a chair, or writing — can become more difficult.

How Physical Therapy Helps

Physical therapy isn’t just about exercise — it’s about retraining the body and brain to move with purpose. A skilled PT can help patients:

• Improve gait and posture
• Increase balance and reduce fall risk
• Boost strength and mobility
• Maintain independence in daily tasks
• Regain confidence in movement

Therapists often use Parkinson-specific programs, like LSVT BIG, which focus on making movements bigger, more deliberate, and more controlled. At Atlantic Physical Therapy Center, we have several Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists that are LSVT BIG certified. (More info here)

Real Progress Through Movement

At APTC, our therapists work closely with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan based on their symptoms and goals. We may include:

  • Functional movement training (like sit-to-stand practice)

  • Balance and coordination drills

  • Flexibility and strength-building exercises

  • Gait training and walking drills

  • Cueing techniques for smoother movement

Consistency is key. Even small daily efforts can lead to real gains in mobility, independence, and quality of life.
